The Rise in Popularity of Tile Mosaics and Backsplashes

Interior designers and decorators swear by tile floors and backsplashes. They understand that most of them come with an almost timeless appeal. However, as one such expert writes, “Installing tile in your home can be a big investment — kitchen and bathroom remodels, specifically, are the two most expensive renovation projects. So the last thing you want to do is pay for a new tile [installation], only to find out it’s not in style anymore.”

That’s why it is a good idea to take a look at what the trending styles in tiles might be, and try to integrate those options into your home project. One such trend is for the use of tiles to make mosaics (on the floors or walls) and to be used as visually appealing backsplashes. Among the latest innovations in tiles for this purpose are:

Boldly colored tiles – Whether you opt to use mosaic tiles that can be put to use as a traditional backsplash around a kitchen or bathroom sink, or you go with the current trend of a floor to ceiling backsplash or bath/shower surround, opting for a flood of color is a very wise idea. Choose a single hue or a multitude of colors to give yourself the most flexibility with decorating (and re-decorating well into the future).

Mixed material tiles – Mosaics and backsplashes can be plain, such as an all white palette, but you can also do mixed materials such as glass and metal, pebbles and stones, and create wonderful themes. Whether you are going for a contemporary look and choose glass or metal mosaics or you create a low-key, soothing space with natural stones, you can use the backsplash or tiled wall as the focal point.

Terracotta tiles – Seeming to be in the raw, they can be baked and finished to allow them to be entirely waterproof and impervious to wear. Giving any space a more rustic tone, the natural reddish hues also add tremendous warmth. Whether used in a basic geometric square or in Moorish influenced forms and shapes, they bring a lot of character and flexibility.

Grout – A fun and affordable way to transform basic tile, such as appealing white tiles, into something a bit more is to have your expert installer use a contrasting color in the grout. It might be black against white, but you can ask them about color options to see what choices exist.

Detailed and/or parquet patterns – Heavily detailed tile installations with a lot of unique but repetitive patterns is a great way to get the most out of a new tile installation. Choosing a simpler, rectangular tile, and having your expert installers use a herringbone or parquet pattern is also a wonderfully innovative and enduring style choice.
